The most common reason why your dog would bark is because
they are bored. Dogs are accustomed to a lot of attention, so when they aren’t
receiving it, they bark, this ultimately brings the attention back to them. For
example, if your dog is unhappy about being outside and they are barking
eventually allow them back inside with you, they will learn that barking gets
results. Remember that barking is a natural behavior for dogs. Dogs need to be
entertained and exercised regularly. Dogs that are left alone for long periods
of time need an outlet for all of their
pent up energy. These dogs are likely to
take up barking as a hobby because no-one is there to control them. The barking
then becomes a habit and they continue to do so for the sheer fun of it.
To elevate this
problem, spend plenty of time playing with your dog. Make sure they have ample
food and water, and lots of toys to keep them entertained while you are away.
Make sure you are exercising your dog at least once a day; this will help to alleviate
most of your dogs boredom. A well exercised dog will be a happy dog and is more
likely to sleep when you are not at home.
Dogs need friends and companions. By letting them into the
house when you are home, will make them feel like part of the family. Dogs also
need to be socially exercised. Even if you have a large back yard your dog may
not be exercising in it. The mad dashing around that you observe them doing can
just be a form of nervous activity. Dogs love to investigate their surroundings,
taking them for a walk allows them to check out new sights and sounds. Try
taking them to the park, letting them socialize with other dogs is a great way
to tire them out. Remember a tired dog will sleep, therefore it is less likely
to bark when alone.
You will never stop a dog from barking altogether, and breaking
a dogs barking habit can take a little while. Be patient, calm and strong in
your commands. Dogs respond to praise, so make sure you are giving your dog a
lot of it. Some breeds bark a lot more than others, check with your vet to find
out if your dogs barking habits are normal. If you still have trouble getting
your dog to stop barking, contact a vet that is trained in behavioral problems.
